Listen and compare
Compare audio at matched loudness
Separate tonal and dynamic changes from a simple volume increase.
A louder version can seem more exciting in a quick comparison. Match perceived playback level before judging a processing change. Keep your monitoring setup and listening position consistent while you compare.
Work through it
- Choose a representative section that includes both dense and quieter material. Match playback levels as closely as practical before switching.
- Listen for specific differences: vocal clarity, low-end balance, transient shape and ambience. Write down what changed instead of only choosing a favorite.
- Repeat at a moderate level and on another familiar playback system. Return to the original when a change solves one issue but creates another.
Check your result
- The comparison uses the same musical section.
- Playback level is accounted for.
- The decision is based on an identified audible change.
